In Ganvié, the entire life of the inhabitants is on water: only the dead go back to the ground, buried in the only island standing out of the water enough not to be submerged by the tide. There is also, in a village one hour to the north, a floating police station, with an official canoe and cops who sometimes wear a uniform. “And to call the police?” I ask. “You go on a canoe” answer the floating grocers.
