The Tofinus, founders of Ganvié, came to the lagoon three Centuries ago, fleeing the Fon and Dahomey warriors who wanted to sell them to Portuguese slave traders. Only water could save them, because a taboo forbade the warriors to touch it: they never left the lagoon. Today, they still regard the white man with suspicion, because he is, somehow, heir of the ancient slavers.
