In Zanzibar, the ingredients for the construction of dhows, the ancient cargo ships whose design has remained unchanged for the last nine hundred years, are just two: wood and hands. In one year, five men turn logs into a wonderfully hydrodynamic hull conceived to outlive steel. In Nungwi’s shipyards, at the dawn of the third Millennium, the shipmasters of Zanzibar work with tools from the Bronze Age.
